Why Get A RESNET Certification?

by Jeff on February 2, 2010

So you want to be an energy auditor, huh? As you may already know, the first step is always to get certified. Just like a real estate agent or stock broker, no one is going to trust you unless you are licensed.

But with multiple different types of energy auditor certification out there, which one should you get? In most situations, it is always best to go with the standard, and the standard in the home energy auditing industry is the RESNET Certification.

Why should I get a RESNET Certification?

RESNET is a nonprofit organization that sets national standards for energy auditor accreditation and building energy performance. These standards are widely recognized by government agencies and national organizations in the United States including the EPA, Department of Energy, and the mortgage and finance industry.

Furthermore, home energy audits are currently in high demand due to the numerous tax credits being offered by the government. In many cases, a home energy audit must be performed by a RESNET certified auditor in order for the homeowner to qualify for the energy tax credits they seek. If you are not RESNET certified, many potential customers may have to turn to your competition to perform their home energy audits instead.

If you are interested in more information about getting your RESNET accreditation, you can visit the RESNET certification page on the Home Energy Team Institute site, or you can sign up for your first online RESNET course through the same site.
