If you have heard about the exploding home energy audit industry and are looking for a new career, you may be asking yourself where to start. Well, just like many other lucrative careers, the path to success as a home energy auditor starts with a proper education.
Similar to a lawyer passing the bar or a real estate professional getting their license, to become a true home energy audit professional, you must first achieve certification from a recognized home energy audit organization. The most common certification that new energy auditing professionals strive for is their RESNET Certification, which offers two different levels of accreditation.
RESNET Certification Level 1
A Level 1 RESNET certification will allow you to perform basic home energy audit surveys without the use of technical auditing equipment. This level of accreditation certifies that you are able to complete a basic home energy survey report for a homeowner. This is the first step in the home energy audit process.
To receive this certification, you must complete a 16 hour online RESNET course and then pass the certification exam.
RESNET Certification Level 2
The Level 2 RESNET certification will allow you to do more detailed home energy audits using technical equipment. This time of energy audit is more in-depth and is generally the next step after a basic survey has been completed. Home energy audit professionals who wish to be able to provide their clients with a full range of auditing services must first receive this level of RESNET Certification.
To achieve this level of accreditation, you must first complete a RESNET Level 2 course and then successfully pass the Level 2 exam.
